Chat times by Countries around the World in August 2023
How Has Live Video Chatting Evolved Over Time? From 2015 to August 2023
Live video chatting has changed the ways we connect, have fun, and even earn our livings, it has become the go to way for quick interactions with other people. More and more people are signing up to be webcam chat hosts. In fact, as of August 2023, there were 714,009 registered chat host accounts worldwide. But not everyone is active. Out of all these accounts, only 13,920 chat hosts from 112 countries actually went online in August 2023. That's a small part of the whole population of chat hosts.
Why is that? There could be many reasons, some people might just be casual hosts who only go online once in a while. Others might find it as a seasonal thing, maybe getting busy with other stuff at different times of the year. And let's not forget, it is a competitive industry the live webcam chat world.
However, those who are active are really putting in the time, together, they racked up 760,324 hours of webcam chatting in August 2023. On average, each country has about 124 active chat hosts, who have spent around 55 hours online each one of them. Each host had about 348 live chat sessions, and each session lasted about 11 minutes.
Averages are often used in statistics to provide a simplified view of data, but they can sometimes be misleading or fail show the real picture a situation. In the following lines and charts you will see how much time chat hosts from one hundred twelve countries have accumulated doing live video chatting during August 2023.
Classification of worldwide accumulated chat time in August 2023
Classification of 760,324 hours of live video chat into 17 groups
The first thing that is easily seen by the examination of the Classification of countries by their accumulated times in video chatting, is the fact that there are only two countries out of 112 in the group of more than 200k hours of live video chat. These two countries are Colombia, Russian Federation, and they have 451,274 hours out of a total of 760,324. In other words, 59.35% of the chat hours was collected by the 1.8% of the countries worldwide.
Additional statistical analysis of the data shows that the median number of chat hours from the set of
countries is 170. The mean (average) number of chat hours is
6,789 per country, 6
countries have collected more than the average number of live video chat hours, and
106 have less.
Another interesting finding is that the majority of the countries, around 53%, have collected chat hours
that are closer to the harmonic mean, which is 9.
Global Trends in Live Video Chat Usage from 2015 to August 2023. Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 and Statistical Variations
The following line chart displays the accumulated time spend worldwide on live video chat from 2015 to August 2023. One thing that stands out is a big drop in online chat time between January 2020 and November 2021. This is likely because of the COVID-19 lockdowns that affected the whole world. Despite this dip, the overall trend of the line is almost flat but slightly going up.
On average, webcam chat hosts spent about 1,051,625 hours per month chatting online. Another way to look at the average is through something called the "Harmonic Mean", which is 1,036,510 hours per month. In simple words, the Harmonic Mean is another type of average that gives less weight to really high or really low numbers. It's a way to get a more balanced average.
Monthly average chat time from 2015 until today
The chart also shows some ups and downs in how much time people spend chatting. The highest point was in October 2019, with 1,353,988 hours. The lowest was in February 2019, with 797,471 hours. These highs and lows can be measured using something called "Standard Deviation", which in this case is 127,703. In simple terms, standard deviation tells us how much the numbers jump around from the average. A high standard deviation means the numbers are spread out more, and a low one means they're closer together. Here, the standard deviation of 127,703. tells us that there's a moderate amount of fluctuation from the average.
The chart gives us a good look at how people's online chat behavior has changed from 2015 to August 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic clearly had a big impact, but it seems like things are slowly getting back to normal. The general trend is slightly rising, which could mean that people are gradually spending more time on live webcam chats.
Monthly Average Time Spent by Live Video Chat Hosts from 2015 to 2023. Insights into Trends, Effects of COVID-19, and Statistical Variability
The following line chart shows the average time that a live video chat host has spent chatting each month from 2015 to August 2023. Interestingly, the time that individual hosts spent online actually went up between January 2020 and November 2021, even though the total time spent across all hosts went down during this period because of the COVID-19 lockdowns as you can see in the chart above. Overall, the line is pretty steady and shows a slight increase over time.
On average, a chat host spends about 55 hours per month online. Another way to look at this average is through the harmonic mean, which is 54 hours per month. Just like in the previous example, the harmonic mean is a type of average that gives less importance to really high or really low numbers. It's a way to get a more balanced view of a set of numbers.
Monthly average chat time per host from 2015 until today
The chart also shows some variation in the time hosts spend online. The highest amount of time was in December 2020, with 70 hours, and the lowest was in February 2019, with just 37 hours. These ups and downs can be measured with the "Standard Deviation", which in this case is only 6. The standard deviation of 6 means that most hosts are spending time pretty close to the average, not varying too much.
What does the line chart tells us? Even though the COVID-19 pandemic led to a big drop in total chat time across all hosts, individual chat hosts were actually online more often during that period. This could be because fewer people were hosting, so the ones who were online took on more hours. Overall, the trend is slightly rising, suggesting that hosts are gradually spending a bit more time online as we move forward.

Live video chatting has become a popular way for people to connect, have fun, and even make money. As of August 2023, there are over 700,000 registered chat hosts worldwide. But not all of them are active; only about 18,000 from 112 countries were online in that month. Why is that? Some might be casual hosts, while others might find it seasonal. Those who are active, however, are really putting in the hours.
The world of live video chatting is more complex than it might seem at first glance. While the COVID-19 pandemic had a big impact on total chat time, individual hosts were actually more active during that period. This could be because there were fewer hosts, so those who were active took on more hours. The data also shows that most of the chat time is coming from just a couple of countries, and the majority of hosts are spending time close to the average. As we move forward, the trend suggests that hosts are gradually spending a bit more time online. So, whether you're a host or someone who enjoys live video chats, it looks like this way of connecting with people is here to stay.
